Amaurobiids

Amaurobiids are a family of araneomorph spiders commonly known as the "hackled-web weavers" or "ushers". They belong to the superfamily Amaurobioidea and are found primarily in the Holarctic region, with some species extending into the Southern Hemisphere. These spiders are characterized by their cribellate silk, which is a fuzzy, unsticky silk produced by a comb-like appendage called a cribellum. They spin irregular, sheet-like webs that are often built in sheltered locations such as under bark, in leaf litter, or in crevices.

The webs of amaurobiids typically have a funnel-shaped retreat where the spider waits for prey. They are nocturnal hunters and are generally considered beneficial as they feed on a variety of insects. Amaurobiid spiders are typically medium-sized and their coloration can vary, often being mottled brown or gray, providing good camouflage in their natural habitats. Sexual dimorphism is common, with males often being smaller and more slender than females. Reproduction involves the male transferring sperm to the female, and the female will then lay her eggs in an egg sac, which she guards until the spiderlings hatch. Some species are known for their distinct stridulatory organs, used for communication.
