Amatörradiaverksamhet

Amatörradiaverksamhet, or amateur radio activity, is a voluntary, non-commercial pursuit in which individuals use radio equipment to communicate, experiment with radio techniques and electronics, and provide public service through radio communications. Radio amateurs, or ham operators, build and operate stations, design and tune antennas, and explore radio propagation across HF, VHF and UHF bands. The work often includes SSB, CW, and digital modes, satellite and meteor-scatter experiments, as well as contesting, training, and on-air education. A central element is the exchange of information and the development of technical skills, with a tradition of international friendship and cooperation. QSLs and logkeeping are common practices for confirming contacts.

In Sweden, amatörradiaverksamhet is regulated by the Post- och telestyrelsen (PTS). A license and a callsign are required to operate legally. Licensing typically involves passing examinations on radio theory, regulations and safety, and is supported by the Swedish amateur-radio society SSA, which also runs educational activities, contests, and public service programs. Callsigns used by Swedish amateurs normally begin with SM, in line with international practice, and operators must comply with national and international rules on spectrum use, power limits and interference prevention.

The activity is international in scope, with organizations such as the IARU coordinating among national societies. Amateurs participate in emergency communications, public service events, and technical experimentation, contributing to education and the development of radio technology while adhering to essential safety and legal standards.
