It is not the official name of a single contemporary competition; rather, it has been used to refer to tiers within national league systems where professional status is not required. The exact use and meaning vary by country and sport, but the common feature is a separation from fully professional divisions.

In many sports, amater leagues sit within the lower end of the national pyramid and serve as the competitive arena for community clubs, youth development teams, and smaller communities. Clubs in these leagues often depend on volunteer staff, part-time players, local sponsorship, and crowd-based revenue rather than full-time professional salaries. Competition formats usually include promotion and relegation with adjacent tiers, allowing successful teams to ascend toward higher levels of organized competition.
