Amastrid

Amastrid is a genus of flowering plants in the family Amaryllidaceae, native to South Africa. The genus was first described by the botanist Ker Gawler in 1805. Amastrids are known for their striking, bell-shaped flowers that are typically white or cream-colored with a yellow throat. The flowers are often fragrant and are produced in clusters at the top of the plant.

Amastrids are perennial plants that grow from bulbs and are commonly grown as ornamental plants in gardens and nurseries. They prefer well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. Amastrids are relatively easy to grow and can be propagated by division of the bulb or by seed.

There are approximately 15 species of Amastrid, including Amastris amaryllidiflora, Amastris belladonna, and Amastris leptophylla. Amastrids are also known by the common name of bell amaryllis. The genus name Amastrid is derived from the Greek words "amas" meaning "love" and "strid" meaning "to sing," referring to the fragrant flowers of the plant.
