Alþýðusögur

Alþýðusögur, literally translating to "people's stories" or "folk tales," refers to a collection of traditional Icelandic folk tales and legends. These stories have been passed down orally through generations, preserving a rich cultural heritage and offering insights into the beliefs, values, and worldview of the Icelandic people. The genre encompasses a wide variety of narratives, including tales of trolls, hidden people (huldufólk), ghosts, witches, and various supernatural beings.

These stories often served as entertainment and moral instruction, exploring themes of bravery, cunning, justice, and the consequences of greed or wickedness. Many alþýðusögur feature encounters between ordinary people and the supernatural, highlighting the perceived presence of these beings in the Icelandic landscape and the respect or caution with which they were treated.
