Alusväetiste

The most common species of alusväetiste is Teredo navalis, which is native to the North Atlantic Ocean. This worm has a distinctive, cone-shaped shell and can grow up to 15 centimeters in length. It attaches itself to the surface of wooden structures and bores into the wood, creating a tunnel that can weaken the structure over time.

The life cycle of alusväetiste begins with the release of larvae into the water, which then settle on suitable wooden surfaces. Once attached, the larvae metamorphose into juvenile worms, which continue to bore into the wood. As the worm grows, it produces a cone-shaped shell that protrudes from the surface of the wood. The worm feeds on the wood, creating a tunnel that can cause significant damage to the structure.

Alusväetiste is a major problem for the maritime industry, as it can cause structural damage to ships and other watercraft, leading to costly repairs and maintenance. In addition, the worm can also pose a health risk to humans, as it can carry bacteria that can cause infections.
