Alumiiniumelekter, often referred to as aluminum electrolysis, is a crucial industrial process used for the purification of aluminum. This electrochemical method is the primary way aluminum metal is produced globally. The process involves passing a strong electric current through a molten solution of alumina (aluminum oxide) dissolved in cryolite (sodium aluminum fluoride). Alumina is derived from bauxite ore, which is the principal source of aluminum.

The molten cryolite acts as a solvent, lowering the melting point of alumina and allowing it to conduct electricity. Inside the electrolytic cell, which is typically lined with carbon, alumina dissociates into aluminum ions and oxide ions. At the cathode (the carbon lining), aluminum ions gain electrons and are reduced to molten aluminum metal, which collects at the bottom of the cell. At the anode (also made of carbon), oxide ions lose electrons and react with the carbon anode, producing carbon dioxide gas. This consumption of the carbon anode is a key aspect of the process, necessitating periodic replacement.

The Hall-Héroult process, developed independently by Charles Martin Hall and Paul Héroult in 1886, is the most common method for alumiiniumelekter. This process is highly energy-intensive, requiring significant amounts of electricity. The purity of the produced aluminum is generally very high, typically around 99.5% to 99.9%. Further refining can be done to achieve even higher purities for specialized applications. The widespread use of aluminum in various industries, from transportation to packaging, is a testament to the efficiency and effectiveness of alumiiniumelekter.
