Altmarkkreis

Altmarkkreis is a district in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It was formed in 2007 through the merger of the former districts of Gardelegen and Salzwedel. The district is named after the historic region of Altmark, which historically encompassed a significant portion of the current district's territory. The administrative seat of Altmarkkreis is in Gardelegen.

The landscape of Altmarkkreis is characterized by its predominantly agricultural areas, interspersed with forests and wetlands. The Elbe River forms a natural boundary to the east of the district. Notable towns within Altmarkkreis include Salzwedel, known for its historic old town and its association with the Struwelpeter fairy tales, and Gardelegen, which boasts a well-preserved medieval town center.
