Alterdingen

Alterdingen is a municipality in the district of Aargau, Switzerland. It is located in the southeastern part of the canton, in the Biber Valley. The municipality consists of the village of Alterdingen and the hamlets of Oberalterdingen and Unteralterdingen.

The area of Alterdingen has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Archaeological finds suggest settlement during the Neolithic period and the Bronze Age. Roman coins and pottery have also been discovered in the region. The name "Alterdingen" is believed to have Germanic origins, possibly referring to an early settlement or a person named Alther.

Historically, Alterdingen was part of the County of Baden. During the medieval period, it was under the rule of various noble families. The Reformation had a significant impact on the region. In 1798, Alterdingen became part of the Helvetic Republic and subsequently the Canton of Aargau in 1803.
