Altaikkien

The Altaikkien are an ethnolinguistic group inhabiting the northern highlands of Eldoria, a fictional continent. They traditionally occupy the Altaik Range and the surrounding valleys and coastal basins, where rugged terrain has shaped a mixed agricultural and pastoral economy. Their territory is characterized by mountains, conifer forests, and short growing seasons that influence settlement patterns and craft production.

Etymology: The name Altaikkien derives from the Altaik language, with “Altaik” meaning “high” and the suffix “-kien” denoting people.

Language: They speak Altaikian, a member of the Altaikic language family. It comprises three regional dialects—Northern, Central, and Southern. A runic-inspired script is used in inscriptions and, since the medieval period, in limited literacy efforts and liturgical contexts.

History: Archaeological sites indicate permanent settlement from the late Bronze Age. By the medieval era a loose confederation of clans governed by elder councils emerged. Contacts with neighboring polities included trade along river routes and coastal ports. In the modern era they attained autonomous administration within the Eldorian Confederation, reinforcing regional governance and cultural institutions.

Society and culture: Social organization centers on kin-based clans, with an assembly of elders and, on occasion, a ceremonial chief. Traditional crafts include wool weaving, copper smithing, wood carving, and distinctive architecture. The diet blends barley, root crops, dairy, fish, and small livestock. Seasonal rites honor mountain spirits, harvests, and communal renewal.

Economy and contemporary status: Historically pastoral and agricultural, the Altaikkien maintain a mixed economy with timber, craft production, and growing cultural tourism. Language preservation and cultural festivals are supported by regional institutions, while population estimates range from 40,000 to 70,000.
