Alsópetény

Alsópetény is a village in Nógrád County, Hungary. It is situated in the southern part of the county, in the Cserhát hills. The village is located approximately 70 kilometers northeast of Budapest.

The history of Alsópetény can be traced back to the Árpád era. The name "Petény" likely derives from a personal name. The settlement was first mentioned in written records in 1300. Over centuries, it was owned by various noble families, including the Petényi, Perczel, and Prónay families. The Prónay family played a significant role in the village's development, particularly in the 18th and 19th centuries, when they built a manor house and established a park.
