Almansa

Almansa is a municipality in the province of Albacete, in the autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha, Spain. It lies in the eastern part of the province, near the border with the Valencian Community, in a landscape of rolling hills within the Júcar river basin. The town serves as the administrative center of a municipality that includes surrounding rural areas as well as the urban core.

The area shows traces of Iberian and Roman settlement and was later part of the Moorish domain before the Christian reconquest in the Middle Ages. Almansa developed as a fortified town, and in 1707 the Battle of Almansa occurred nearby during the War of the Spanish Succession. The Bourbon victory in this battle helped determine control of the Spanish throne and had a lasting impact on the conflict’s outcome.

Economy traditionally relied on agriculture, including cereals, vegetables, vines and fruit trees, with livestock and a growing service and small-industry sector. The municipality is connected to nearby towns by regional roads; public transport is mainly by bus, with access to larger urban centers in the region.

Culturally, Almansa preserves a historic core with a hilltop site and several churches and public buildings reflecting older architecture. The area also commemorates its historical role with monuments and a local narrative around the battle. Almansa functions as a local administrative and service center for eastern Castile-La Mancha and forms part of the broader cultural and historical landscape of the region.
