Almabtrieb
Almabtrieb is a traditional cattle drive from alpine pastures down into the valleys, celebrated in Alpine regions of Austria, southern Germany (notably Bavaria and the Allgäu), and parts of Switzerland and northern Italy. The name means “descent from the alps.” In Bavaria some villages use the term Viehscheid for the same practice, while the Austrian and Tyrolean usage typically uses Almabtrieb. The event signals the end of the summer grazing season and the return of cattle to stables for the winter.
