Allatiivmärgid, also known as the dative case in Estonian grammar, are grammatical markers used to indicate the dative case. The dative case is one of the six cases in Estonian, a Uralic language spoken primarily in Estonia. It is used to express various relationships between nouns and other parts of the sentence, often indicating the recipient or beneficiary of an action.

In Estonian, allatiivmärgid are suffixes attached to nouns to form the dative case. These suffixes vary depending on the declension type of the noun, which is determined by the noun’s ending in its nominative form. For example, nouns ending in *-u* or *-ü* typically take the suffix *-ule*, while nouns ending in *-a* or *-ä* often take the suffix *-ale*. Some nouns, particularly those ending in *-s*, *-ss*, or *-t*, may use *-le* or *-le* with additional adjustments.

The dative case is commonly used to express indirect objects, indicating to whom or for whom an action is performed. For instance, the phrase "anna raha poegule" translates to "give money to the son," where *-ule* is the dative suffix. It can also appear in prepositional phrases, such as "õpetaja *kõrvale*" ("next to the teacher"), where *-le* marks the dative form of the noun "kõrval" (side).

Estonian’s dative case is distinct from other cases like the genitive or partitive, which indicate possession or partial quantities, respectively.
