Alkoholiks is a term that has been used historically to refer to individuals struggling with alcohol dependence or addiction. While the term is largely considered outdated and potentially stigmatizing by modern medical and psychological communities, it reflects an earlier understanding of the condition. Today, the preferred terminology is "alcohol use disorder" (AUD), which is a medical diagnosis that encompasses a range of problematic drinking behaviors. AUD is characterized by an impaired ability to stop or control alcohol use despite adverse social, occupational, or health consequences.

The understanding of alcohol-related issues has evolved significantly. In the past, terms like "alcoholic" were often used in a judgmental or moralistic way, suggesting a personal failing rather than a complex medical condition. Current approaches emphasize that AUD is a chronic brain disease that can be treated effectively. Treatment often involves a combination of behavioral therapies, medication, and support groups. Relapse is considered a common part of recovery, and long-term management is often necessary. The shift in language reflects a greater emphasis on compassion, evidence-based treatment, and reducing the stigma associated with addiction.
