Alikuviot

Alikuviot, in Finnish, refers to a single figure that contains several related images, diagrams, or graphs. Each element is presented as a subfigure and can be described with its own caption, while a main caption provides an overall description of the composite figure. This arrangement supports direct visual comparison within one figure.

Purpose and use

Alikuviot are used to compare methods, conditions, or data components side by side without duplicating full figures for each item. They improve space efficiency and help readers see relationships among the panels more clearly, for example when showing different experimental results, model outputs, or time steps.

Construction and labeling

Subfigures are usually labeled with letters (a), (b), (c) in the order they appear. The overall figure caption explains the collective content, and each subcaption identifies its specific panel. Designers aim for consistent scale, alignment, and spacing to maintain a clean, readable presentation.

Tools and examples

In LaTeX, subcaption or subfig packages are commonly used to create alikuviot. In word processors, images can be grouped under a single figure caption with individual subcaptions. In HTML, a figure element may contain multiple images or sections, each with its own accessible label or caption to describe the panel.

Considerations

Accessible design is important: provide alt text for each subimage, ensure legibility of small panels, and avoid excessive clutter. Alikuviot should be employed when the relationship among panels is central to the conveyed message.
