Alikulut

Alikulut is a ceremonial vessel central to the harvest rites of the fictional Alik people of the western archipelago. Traditionally, the bowl is filled with a sacred liquid—commonly resin or water—before communal prayers, and it serves as the focus for offerings, songs, and communal reaffirmation of ties among participants.

Etymology: The term derives from the Alik language, with ali- meaning "together" and kulut denoting "flow" or "liquid," reflecting the vessel’s function as a focal point for shared processions and sustenance.

Construction and appearance: Alikulut is typically carved from hardwood such as cedar or ebony, with a broad, rounded body and a narrow base. The exterior bears incised geometric motifs, and many examples incorporate inlays of shell or bone. It is usually paired with a slender wooden ladle.

Use in ceremony: During rites, the alikulut is placed on a central stand and passed clockwise among participants. Each person adds a measured amount of the sacred liquid, a ritual act that symbolizes mutual responsibility and communal prosperity. The vessel may be emptied into a pool or poured onto the earth as part of the rite.
