Alfrocheiro

Alfrocheiro is a red wine grape variety native to Portugal. It is grown across several wine regions but is most associated with the Douro and Dão regions. The variety is used both in blended wines and, less commonly, as a varietal wine.

As for viticulture, Alfrocheiro ripens late and tends to produce wines with deep color, good acidity, and moderate tannins. The varietal wines often show aromas of red berries such as cherry and plum, along with floral and spicy notes, and may gain complexity with oak aging.

In winemaking, Alfrocheiro is valued for color, acidity, and perfume, typically contributing structure and aging potential in blends. It is commonly blended with Touriga Nacional and other varieties in Douro and Dão wines. When vinified alone, it can yield approachable wines in their youth but also age gracefully.

Alfrocheiro remains one of Portugal's important autochthonous red varieties, reflecting the country's diverse viticulture. Plantings are concentrated in central Portugal, especially Douro and Dão, with smaller plantings elsewhere. Climate and vintage conditions influence its performance and style from year to year.
