Aleris

Aleris was a multinational aluminum company that produced rolled aluminum products for automotive, aerospace, construction, and packaging markets. It operated facilities in North America and Europe and supplied customers worldwide. The company’s products included sheet, plate, and pre-painted or pre-coated aluminum used in vehicle panels, aircraft skins, architectural cladding, and packaging applications.

Aleris grew through acquisitions and expansions to become a major supplier of rolled aluminum. In 2019, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States amid debt and market pressures. The bankruptcy proceedings aimed to restructure operations and reduce liabilities. In 2020, Aleris agreed to be acquired by Novelis, a leading aluminum producer and subsidiary of Hindalco Industries, for approximately $2.8 billion. The transaction was completed later that year, and Aleris’ assets and operations were integrated into Novelis.

Following the acquisition, the Aleris brand ceased to exist as a separate corporate entity, with production continuing under the Novelis name. The deal expanded Novelis’ global footprint, capacity, and product portfolio, particularly in high-value rolled aluminum for automotive and other advanced applications. The sale also affected employees, suppliers, and communities hosting Aleris facilities, as operations were aligned with Novelis’ global strategy and manufacturing network.
