Aleatorisen is a Finnish term used to describe artistic practices that incorporate chance elements or indeterminacy into the creative process. The word derives from the Latin alea, meaning dice or game of chance, and is the Finnish counterpart to the English term “aleatoric.” In practice, aleatorisen approaches leave certain decisions to factors outside the composer’s full control, such as performer choices, random methods, or events beyond the artist’s precise intention.

In music, aleatorisen techniques designate procedures where some aspects of a work—timing, order, duration, pitch or dynamics—are not completely determined ahead of time. This can involve chance operations, open-ended scores, or performance instructions that permit substantial interpretation by performers. John Cage is a central figure associated with indeterminacy and chance-based methods; his use of the I Ching to generate material for Music of Changes and his performance-centered pieces highlighted the role of randomness in shaping musical outcomes. Graphic scores by Earle Brown and other mid-20th-century composers further illustrated how performers could exercise interpretation within broad or flexible parameters. The concept later influenced various composers and movements that explored openness, process, and contingency in music.

Beyond music, aleatorisen practices appear in other art forms, such as visual arts and literature, where randomness, chance rules, or open-ended processes determine materials, sequence, or revelation. In Finnish discourse, aleatorisen is used to distinguish works that explicitly incorporate chance from those that are fully predetermined or serial in structure.
