Aldehüüdidesid

Aldehüüdidesid, known scientifically as aldehydes, are a class of organic compounds characterized by the presence of a formyl group. This functional group consists of a carbonyl group (a carbon atom double-bonded to an oxygen atom) bonded to at least one hydrogen atom. The general formula for aldehydes is RCHO, where R represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl or aryl group.

Aldehydes are important intermediates in both industrial and biological processes. Industrially, they are synthesized through various methods, including the oxidation of primary alcohols. Common examples of aldehydes include formaldehyde (HCHO), which is used in the production of resins and plastics, and acetaldehyde (CH3CHO), a precursor to acetic acid and ethanol.

In biological systems, aldehydes play a crucial role in metabolism. For instance, acetaldehyde is a metabolic byproduct of alcohol consumption and can be toxic in high concentrations. Other biologically relevant aldehydes are involved in the synthesis of amino acids and the breakdown of carbohydrates.
