Albategnius

Albategnius is a prominent impact crater located on the near side of the Moon. It is situated within the southeastern part of the Mare Serenitatis, a large, dark lunar plain. The crater's name honors the 9th-century Persian astronomer Muhammad ibn Musa al-Battani, also known as Albategnius.

The crater is relatively old, with an estimated age of about 3.5 billion years. Its diameter is approximately 166 kilometers (103 miles), making it a significant lunar feature. The rim of Albategnius is well-defined and shows signs of erosion due to billions of years of micrometeorite impacts. The central peak, a common feature in large craters, is prominent within Albategnius. This peak is thought to have formed from the rebound of the lunar crust after the impact event.

Albategnius has a moderately deep floor, and its surface is covered with ejecta, material thrown out during the impact. The crater's location in Mare Serenitatis means its surrounding landscape is relatively flat, except for the crater itself and other smaller impact features. Due to its size and distinct features, Albategnius is easily visible from Earth with a small telescope and is a popular subject for lunar observation.
