Alavarmasti

Alavarmasti is an ancient Tamil fortress located on a hilltop in Alavarmangalam village, Tamil Nadu, India. The name is derived from the Tamil words "alavar," meaning chief or commander, and "masti," meaning fortress or citadel.

The site dates back to the 2nd to 1st century BCE, during the Sangam period, a time of great cultural and literary achievement in ancient Tamil Nadu. It is believed to have been built by the ancient Tamil kingdoms of the Cheras or the Cholas, although the exact builder is not known.

The fortress is constructed on a rock outcrop, with imposing stone walls and a well planned layout. It consists of three concentric walls, with the inner wall being the strongest and most imposing. The outer walls are less impressive but still well constructed, indicating a gradual progression in the military architecture of the Tamil kingdoms over time.

Excavations at Alavarmasti have uncovered several inscriptions, pottery shards, and other artifacts that provide valuable insights into the lives of the ancient Tamil people. These include coins, beads, and other ornamental items, suggesting a high level of cultural and economic prosperity.
