Aktinoidisarjat

Aktinoidisarjat refers to the series of chemical elements known as the actinides. This group comprises fifteen metallic chemical elements starting with actinium and ending with lawrencium, with atomic numbers 89 through 103. These elements are found in the periodic table and are characterized by their atomic structure, specifically the filling of the 5f electron shell.

The actinoidisarjat includes elements such as thorium, protactinium, uranium, neptunium, plutonium, americium, curium, berkelium, californium, einsteinium, fermium, mendelevium, nobelium, and lawrencium, in addition to actinium. All of these elements are radioactive, meaning their atomic nuclei are unstable and decay over time, emitting radiation. This radioactivity is a defining characteristic of the entire series.

Many actinides occur naturally, though in very small quantities. Uranium and thorium are the most abundant naturally occurring actinides. However, most of the heavier actinides are synthetic, meaning they are produced artificially in nuclear reactors or particle accelerators. Their discovery and synthesis have been significant achievements in nuclear physics and chemistry.

The properties of the actinides, while sharing some similarities, also exhibit a gradual change across the series. Their chemical behavior is complex due to the involvement of electrons in multiple shells.
