Mendelevium is a synthetic element with the symbol Md and atomic number 101. It is a heavy, radioactive metal in the actinide series and is named after Dmitri Mendeleev, the Russian chemist who formulated the periodic table.

Discovery and history: Mendelevium was first synthesized in 1955 by Glenn T. Seaborg, Albert Ghiorso, and colleagues at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. It was produced by bombarding an einsteinium-253 target with alpha particles, forming Md-256. The discovery helped establish element 101 and contributed to the development of transactinide chemistry.

Production and occurrence: Mendelevium is not found in nature and is produced only in extremely small quantities in specialized facilities. Experiments typically yield only a few atoms at a time, and the produced atoms decay rapidly, limiting study to short timescales.

Isotopes and stability: Several isotopes of mendelevium have been synthesized. The most stable known isotope is Md-258, with a half-life of about 51 days. Many other isotopes have half-lives ranging from milliseconds to days, which constrains experimental investigations.

Chemistry and properties: As with other actinides, mendelevium is expected to behave as a heavy metal with complex chemistry. In solution, the element is believed to exhibit the +3 oxidation state most commonly, with lesser formation of +4 compounds under certain conditions. However, detailed chemical characterization is limited by radioactivity and scarcity.
