Akt3

Akt3 is a protein that plays a significant role in cellular signaling pathways, particularly in the regulation of glucose metabolism and insulin signaling. It is a member of the protein kinase B (PKB) family of serine/threonine kinases.

Akt3 is primarily produced in the brain, where it is involved in the development and maintenance of neurons. In this context, Akt3 has been implicated in the regulation of neuronal growth and survival, as well as the modulation of neuroblast differentiation.

The Akt3 gene, also known as AKT3, is located on the short arm of chromosome 1 (1p36.21). It encodes a protein of approximately 53 kDa and contains two protein kinase domains.

Akt3 shares structural and functional homology with other members of the PKB family, including Akt1 and Akt2. While these proteins exhibit overlapping substrate specificities and kinase activities, they also have distinct functional properties.

Mutations in the AKT3 gene have been associated with a rare and severe form of developmental delay and failure to thrive, often referred to as nonsyndromic Wilms tumor. Other studies have linked alterations in Akt3 expression and activity to oncogenesis, suggesting a potential role in tumorigenesis.

Research into the mechanisms of Akt3 regulation and function is ongoing, with potentially significant implications for the treatment of diseases associated with disrupted glucose and lipid metabolism, as well as cancer.
