Ajukahjustuseni, a term derived from Estonian, translates to "brain injury" in English. It broadly refers to any damage to the brain that can occur as a result of physical trauma, disease, or a lack of oxygen. The severity and type of brain injury can vary greatly depending on the cause, location, and extent of the damage.

Common causes of brain injury include traumatic events such as falls, car accidents, sports injuries, or assaults. These can lead to a concussion, which is a mild traumatic brain injury, or more severe injuries like contusions, lacerations, or diffuse axonal injury. Non-traumatic causes include strokes, brain tumors, infections like meningitis or encephalitis, and prolonged exposure to toxins or lack of oxygen (hypoxia).

The symptoms of a brain injury can be wide-ranging and may include physical problems like headaches, dizziness, nausea, and seizures. Cognitive impairments such as memory loss, difficulty concentrating, and problems with problem-solving are also common. Emotional and behavioral changes, including irritability, mood swings, and depression, can also manifest. The long-term effects of brain injury depend on the initial damage and the effectiveness of rehabilitation. Recovery can be a lengthy process, and some individuals may experience permanent disabilities. Diagnosis typically involves neurological examinations, imaging tests like CT scans or MRIs, and assessment of cognitive and behavioral functions. Treatment strategies are tailored to the specific injury and may involve medical interventions, surgery, rehabilitation therapies, and ongoing support.
