Ajanlaskenta, meaning timekeeping in Finnish, refers to the methods and systems used to measure, record, and display time. Historically, humans have devised various tools and techniques to track the passage of time, ranging from simple sundials and water clocks to more complex mechanical and atomic clocks. The fundamental units of timekeeping are seconds, minutes, hours, days, months, and years, each with its own defined duration.

The development of standardized timekeeping was crucial for scientific advancements, navigation, and social organization. Early calendars were based on astronomical observations, such as the cycles of the moon and the apparent position of the sun. The adoption of Gregorian calendars, a solar calendar, became widespread due to its accuracy in aligning with the Earth's orbit around the sun.
