Aivoselkäydinneste, also known as cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), is a clear, colorless bodily fluid that occupies the subarachnoid space and the ventricular system within the brain and spinal cord. It is primarily composed of water, with small amounts of proteins, glucose, electrolytes, and specialized cells such as lymphocytes.

The production of CSF occurs mainly in the choroid plexuses, which are networks of capillaries located within the ventricles of the brain. This fluid then circulates through the ventricular system, eventually draining into the subarachnoid space surrounding the brain and spinal cord. A constant flow and absorption of CSF maintain a stable volume and pressure within these spaces.

Aivoselkäydinneste serves several crucial functions. It acts as a mechanical cushion, protecting the central nervous system from trauma by absorbing shock and impact. It also plays a role in nutrient transport, delivering essential substances to the brain and spinal cord, and removing metabolic waste products. Analysis of CSF through lumbar puncture is a common diagnostic tool used to detect infections like meningitis, inflammatory diseases, and certain types of cancer that affect the central nervous system.
