In database management it appears most commonly in the context of relational database systems and spreadsheet programs, where built‑in functions allow users to combine date and time fields, apply arithmetic on time values, and store temporal information in a format that supports accurate queries and reporting.

Historically, the term entered Finnish technical vocabulary through translations of international standards such as ISO 8601, which specifies a universal format for date‑time representations. Early adoption in Microsoft Access databases introduced a “Format” function that could be used to produce custom time strings, while programming environments like Python introduced native datetime modules that made aikakäsittely more accessible to developers. The term is also present in application programming interfaces for Linux and Windows, where system calls like gettimeofday or QueryPerformanceCounter provide raw time data for performance monitoring.
