Ahelatega

Ahelatega is a constructed language created as a typological case study of island-language dynamics. It is not a natural language and has no real-world speakers. The language was devised by linguists to illustrate how small communities could structure grammar under environmental and social constraints.

Phonology: Ahelatega has a five-vowel system /a e i o u/. The consonant inventory includes p, t, k, b, d, g, m, n, s, l, r, f, h, and a phonemic glottal stop. Syllables are typically CV or CVC, with occasional initial clusters in loan forms. The phonotactics favor straightforward, syllable-talized sequences.

Morphology and syntax: The language is predominantly agglutinative and largely head-final (SOV). Nouns take postposed case markers to indicate subject, object, and oblique roles. Verbs encode aspect, evidentiality, and mood through affixes and clitics. Adjectives generally follow the nouns they modify, and possession is expressed with a noun-plus-marking construction.

Writing system and usage: The primary script is a Latin-based alphabet with diacritics to indicate vowel length and stress. In-world texts include narratives, ethnographic notes, and educational materials. Ahelatega is mainly studied within conlang communities and in fictional contexts, used to illustrate how writing and speech interact in a controlled typological framework.

History and status: Created in 2010 for a typology project by the fictional linguist L. Miro; it has appeared in linguistic handbooks and hobbyist wikis. It remains a pedagogical construct and is not intended to represent a real language.
