Ahafo

Ahafo is a region of Ghana. It was created in 2018 by carving out the Ahafo portion from the former Brong-Ahafo Region and was officially inaugurated in 2019. The regional capital is Goaso. The region’s name reflects its historical association with Akan-speaking communities in the area.

Economy and resources

The region is predominantly rural and agricultural, with crops such as maize, cassava, yams, and cocoa forming the backbone of rural livelihoods. Mining has become a significant economic activity due to the nearby Newmont Ahafo Mine, located near Kenyasi. Since opening in 2006, the mine has become a major employer and contributor to regional and national gold production, influencing local development and infrastructure.

Governance and development

The creation of the Ahafo Region aimed to bring administration closer to residents and speed up development in areas formerly under Brong-Ahafo. The regional government coordinates development projects across its districts and towns, focusing on improving roads, education, health, and basic services.

Demographics and culture

The region is home to Bono and other Akan-speaking communities. The population is largely rural, with communities that maintain Akan cultural traditions, local festivals, and communal activities that reflect the area’s historical ties within the Akan-speaking world.

Geography and environment

The landscape is inland with a tropical climate suited to farming and mixed land use. Like many rural regions in Ghana, Ahafo faces development challenges such as access to quality education, healthcare, and reliable infrastructure, while benefiting from ongoing investment in mining and agriculture.
