Aglia

Aglia is a genus of moths in the family Saturniidae, commonly known as the pine moths. These moths are found in the Palearctic region, with several species native to East Asia, particularly Japan and Korea. The most well-known species is Aglia japonica.

Adult Aglia moths are medium-sized and are characterized by their yellowish or brownish wings, which are often adorned with eyespots. These eyespots are believed to serve as a defense mechanism to deter predators. Unlike many other moths, adult Aglia moths do not feed; they rely on energy reserves accumulated during their larval stage. Their primary purpose is reproduction.

The larval stage, or caterpillar, of Aglia moths feeds on various coniferous trees, with pine species being a common host plant, hence their common name. The caterpillars are typically green and have a segmented body. After completing their larval development, they pupate, forming a cocoon from which the adult moth emerges. The life cycle is complete once mating and egg-laying occur. Aglia moths play a role in their ecosystems as herbivores during their larval stage and as a food source for other animals.
