Aftapstations

Aftapstations are dedicated points within process facilities designed for drawing off liquids from tanks or pipelines in a controlled manner. In Nordic industrial literature the term is used to describe a tap-off station or drain-off point, where liquids can be withdrawn for transfer, sampling, cleaning, or processing without opening main process lines. The concept is similar to what in English is commonly called a drain-off or sampling station, and it is used in various sectors including beverage production, chemical processing, oil and gas, and wastewater treatment.

Typical design and components include a valve manifold that allows isolation of the station from the main line, a primary shutoff valve, a sample or outlet valve, and quick-connect fittings or hoses for transferring liquids. Stations may incorporate a drainage tray or secondary containment, anti-siphon features, and grounding provisions when handling flammable or electrically conductive liquids. Materials are chosen for compatibility with the conveyed liquid and may include stainless steel, brass, or corrosion-resistant plastics. Some aftapstations also integrate metering devices or sample ports for quality control and inventory management.

Common applications cover decanting and sampling during routine operations, transfers during tank cleaning (CIP), and initiating downstream processes. They must meet safety and regulatory requirements relevant to the environment, including proper labeling, fire and explosion protection in hazardous areas, lockout-tagout practices, and regular maintenance. Regular testing, valve maintenance, and leak checks are essential to ensure reliable operation and safe handling of the fluids involved.
