AfroTobagonian

AfroTobagonian refers to people of African descent who are native to the island of Tobago. Tobago, along with Trinidad, forms the nation of Trinidad and Tobago. The population of Tobago is predominantly of African ancestry, a legacy of the transatlantic slave trade and subsequent indentured labor systems. The cultural influences of West Africa are deeply embedded in the AfroTobagonian identity, evident in music, dance, cuisine, language, and religious practices.

The historical trajectory of AfroTobagonians is intertwined with the island's colonial past, primarily under British rule. Enslaved Africans were brought to Tobago to work on sugar plantations, and after emancipation, indentured laborers from other regions, including India and China, also arrived, contributing to the island's diverse ethnic makeup.
