Tobagonian

A Tobagonian is a person from Tobago, the smaller of the two main islands of Trinidad and Tobago, a republic in the Caribbean. Tobago lies northeast of Trinidad and is separated from it by the Columbus Channel. The island covers about 300 square kilometers and is known for its beaches, reefs, and rainforest. The administrative capital is Scarborough, and the island's economy relies heavily on tourism and services, with major natural attractions such as Buccoo Reef, Nylon Pool, and the Main Ridge Forest Reserve.

Historically inhabited by Carib and Arawak peoples, Tobago passed through the hands of Spanish, Dutch, French, and British rule. It was administered as part of the colony of Trinidad, and in 1889 it was joined with Trinidad under British governance. The two islands gained independence as Trinidad and Tobago in 1962, with Tobago receiving a degree of self-government through the Tobago House of Assembly, established in 1980 to oversee local matters. English is the official language; Tobagonian speech commonly features regional English dialects, and Criollo or Creole forms appear in informal speech.

Culture emphasizes Calypso and Soca music, Carnival celebrations, and a relaxed island lifestyle. Coral reefs around Tobago and protected areas such as Buccoo Reef and the Main Ridge Forest Reserve support biodiversity and eco-tourism. The economy centers on tourism, fishing, and small-scale agriculture, with visitors drawn to beaches such as Pigeon Point and quieter coastal towns. Infrastructure includes Crown Point International Airport and ferries linking to Trinidad.
