Afføringskontrol refers to the ability to voluntarily control the passage of stool from the body. It is a complex physiological process involving the coordinated action of the rectal sphincters, pelvic floor muscles, and the nervous system. Development of bowel control, or continence, typically occurs during childhood, with most children achieving it between the ages of 2 and 4 years.

The process of defecation begins with the accumulation of stool in the rectum. This distension triggers sensory receptors that signal the brain, leading to the sensation of needing to defecate. When voluntary control is exercised, the internal and external anal sphincters remain contracted, preventing the release of stool. When the time is appropriate, relaxation of these muscles, along with voluntary abdominal muscle contraction, allows for defecation.

Disruptions to afføringskontrol can result from various factors. These may include neurological conditions affecting nerve signals, damage to the anal sphincters, muscle weakness in the pelvic floor, or gastrointestinal disorders that alter stool consistency or frequency. Bowel incontinence, the inability to control bowel movements, is a common consequence of such disruptions. Management strategies often involve dietary modifications, pelvic floor exercises, medication, and in some cases, surgical interventions. Maintaining good bowel habits and seeking medical advice when control is compromised are important for overall health and well-being.
