Affärscykelteorier, or business cycle theories, are economic frameworks that attempt to explain the recurring fluctuations in economic activity that characterize market economies. These cycles are typically characterized by periods of expansion, where economic output, employment, and investment rise, followed by periods of contraction or recession, where these indicators decline.

Various theories attempt to explain the underlying causes and mechanisms of these cycles. Monetarist theories, for instance, emphasize the role of fluctuations in the money supply and credit availability as primary drivers of economic cycles. They suggest that changes in monetary policy can lead to booms and busts.

Keynesian theories, on the other hand, focus on aggregate demand. They posit that insufficient or excessive aggregate demand can lead to recessions or inflationary booms, respectively. Government intervention through fiscal policy, such as changes in spending and taxation, is often seen as a tool to stabilize the economy according to this perspective.

Other theories highlight different factors. Real business cycle theory suggests that cycles are primarily driven by real shocks to the economy, such as technological advancements or natural disasters, which affect productivity and output. Austrian business cycle theory points to artificial credit expansion by central banks, leading to malinvestment and subsequent busts.

Understanding these theories is crucial for policymakers seeking to mitigate the negative impacts of recessions and promote sustainable economic growth. While no single theory perfectly explains all observed business cycle phenomena, each offers valuable insights into the complex dynamics of economic fluctuations.
