Aerointitoimenpiteitä, commonly translated as aeration measures, refers to actions taken to improve the oxygen levels in aquatic environments, particularly in water bodies like lakes, ponds, and reservoirs. This is crucial for the health and survival of aquatic life, as oxygen is essential for respiration.

These measures are often implemented to combat eutrophication, a process where excessive nutrients lead to algal blooms. When these algae die and decompose, they consume large amounts of dissolved oxygen, creating hypoxic or anoxic conditions that can be detrimental to fish and other organisms.

Aeration can be achieved through various methods. Mechanical aerators, such as surface aspirators or paddlewheels, are commonly used. These devices introduce air into the water by increasing surface turbulence or by directly injecting air or oxygen. Diffused aeration systems, which release air bubbles from the bottom of the water body, are another effective technique. Natural methods, like maintaining riparian vegetation to shade the water and reduce excessive plant growth, also contribute indirectly to oxygen levels.
