Aegiale

Aegiale is a figure from Greek mythology, primarily known as the daughter of Adrastus and Amphithea. She was the wife of Diomedes, one of the most prominent Greek heroes during the Trojan War.

Diomedes, King of Argos, was a formidable warrior. Upon his return from the Trojan War, he found that his wife, Aegiale, had been unfaithful in his absence. Some accounts attribute her infidelity to Aphrodite's intervention, as Diomedes had wounded the goddess during the war. Others suggest that Aegiale was persuaded by her lovers, or that she was influenced by Zeus.

The infidelity of Aegiale led to significant turmoil in Diomedes' life. He was unable to return to his kingdom of Argos and was forced to wander. Some myths state that Diomedes eventually returned to Argos and took vengeance on Aegiale and her lovers. Other traditions suggest that he left Argos and settled in Italy, where he founded several cities. The fate of Aegiale herself varies in different mythological accounts, with some suggesting she was killed and others that she lived out her life in Argos. Her story serves as a dramatic element in the post-war narratives of the returning Greek heroes.
