Advektionsbaserade describes processes, analyses, or models in which transport is governed primarily by advection—the bulk movement of a substance or property with the flow of a fluid. The term is commonly used in fluid dynamics, meteorology, Oceanography, and environmental engineering to emphasize that transport is driven by the velocity field rather than by diffusion or mixing.

Advection refers to the transport of a scalar quantity, such as heat, moisture, or pollutants, by the motion of the surrounding fluid. This is distinct from diffusion, which moves substances down concentration gradients due to molecular or turbulent mixing. In many large-scale geophysical flows, advection dominates the transport of tracers, though diffusion and reactive processes can still play important roles at smaller scales or in specific contexts.

A common mathematical expression is the advection equation for a scalar field φ in a velocity field u: ∂φ/∂t + u · ∇φ = 0. When sources, sinks, or diffusion are present, the more general advection-diffusion equation applies: ∂φ/∂t + u · ∇φ = ∇ · (D ∇φ) + S, where D is a diffusion coefficient and S is a source term. Numerical treatments must manage issues such as numerical diffusion and stability to accurately represent sharp fronts and strong gradients.

Applications include predicting the transport of heat and moisture in weather systems, the movement of contaminants in air or water, and the spread of pollutants or biological tracers in environmental and engineering contexts. Advektionsbaserade approaches are often contrasted with diffusion- or reaction-dominated methods, highlighting the role of flow-driven transport in the observed phenomena.
