In Greek mythology, Adonis is a handsome mortal who is a lover of Aphrodite and, in some versions, Persephone. He dies in a hunting accident when a boar wounds him. The gods decree that he will spend part of the year with Aphrodite and part in the Underworld with Persephone, a myth that allegorizes the annual cycle of growth and decay. The myth inspired rites in antiquity, including the Adonia, an ancient Greek festival in which women planted mourning gardens in his memory.
