Adkousi

Adkousi is a small settlement located in the regional unit of Kavala in Central Macedonia, Greece. The village lies in a gently rolling landscape near the foothills of the Palio Karpas peninsula, and it is approximately twenty kilometers west of the city of Kavala. According to the 2011 census, Adkousi had a population of roughly 980 residents, a number that has remained relatively stable over the past decade.

The history of Adkousi dates back to the Ottoman period when it was known by a different name and was primarily an agricultural community. After the Balkan Wars and the incorporation of the region into Greece, the village adopted its current name and saw gradual modernization. During the 20th century, agricultural activities, especially the cultivation of olives, grapes, and citrus fruits, formed the economic backbone of the village. In recent years, small-scale tourism has begun to supplement the local economy, with visitors attracted by the area’s traditional architecture, nearby beaches, and natural scenery.

Adkousi retains a number of cultural traditions common to the wider Macedonian region. Seasonal festivals include an annual olive harvest celebration that features local music, dancing, and a communal feast. The village is served by basic public amenities such as a primary school, a small health clinic, and a community center that hosts cultural events. Although modest in size, Adkousi exemplifies the rural charm and historical continuity characteristic of many Macedonian villages.
