Adipattiesteriyhdisteitä, often referred to as adipates, are a class of organic compounds derived from adipic acid. Adipic acid is a dicarboxylic acid with the chemical formula (CH₂)₄(COOH)₂. When adipic acid reacts with alcohols, it forms ester linkages, resulting in adipate esters. These compounds are typically colorless liquids or waxy solids and are known for their excellent compatibility with various polymers.

The primary application of adipate esters is as plasticizers. Plasticizers are additives that are incorporated into polymers, such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), to increase their flexibility, workability, and extensibility. Adipate esters are particularly valued for their low-temperature flexibility, meaning they help maintain the pliability of plastics even at sub-zero temperatures. This makes them suitable for applications like wire and cable insulation, automotive interiors, and food packaging films where flexibility is crucial.

Furthermore, some adipate esters exhibit good resistance to extraction by water and oils, contributing to the durability of the plasticized materials. Their relatively low volatility also ensures they remain within the polymer matrix for extended periods. Common examples of adipate plasticizers include di(2-ethylhexyl) adipate (DEHA) and diisononyl adipate (DINA). While widely used, the environmental and health implications of certain adipate esters have been a subject of ongoing research and regulatory scrutiny, leading to the development of alternative plasticizers in some applications.
