Adelsös

Adelsö is an island in Lake Mälaren, Sweden. It is part of Ekerö Municipality in Stockholm County. The name is usually understood to derive from Old Norse elements meaning “noble island,” a reflection of its historical connections to noble estates and early political centers in the region.

The island lies opposite the mainland town of Ekerö and is characterised by a varied coastline with rocky shores, meadows, and woodland. The terrain is shaped by glacial processes, and the area features several smaller lakes and streams. The site Hovgården on Adelsö, alongside the nearby island Björkö’s Birka, constitutes the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Birka and Hovgården,” inscribed in 1993, which highlights early medieval royal power centers and long-distance trade networks. The island is also home to Adelsö Church, a medieval parish church dating from the 12th century, and to burial mounds and archaeological finds from the Iron Age and Viking Age that illustrate long-standing settlement and cultural continuity in the region.
