Additionerism

Additionerism is a term used to describe a condition in which an individual has an excessive or compulsive need to add numbers. This condition is often associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and can manifest in various ways, including the urge to add numbers found in everyday objects, such as prices on receipts, license plate numbers, or even the number of steps taken. This can lead to a cycle of seeking out numbers to add and experiencing a sense of reward upon completion. Medications may also be prescribed to manage symptoms of OCD, which can include additionerism.

It is important to note that additionerism is not a recognized medical diagnosis in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). However, it is a recognized symptom of OCD and can be treated as such.
