Adabiyat

Adabiyat is the term used in several languages of the Muslim world to denote literature or the literary culture of a language. It is derived from the Arabic word adab, meaning manners, learning, culture, or ‘letter,’ together with a suffix forming a field of study. Depending on language, adabiyat is rendered as adabiyat (Arabic-influenced spellings), adabiyāt, ədəbiyyat, adabiyot, or edebiyat, among others.

It covers poetry, prose, drama, essays, criticism, and scholarly writing, as well as the broader enterprise of literary history and theory. Classical adabiyat typically centers on courtly life, moral instruction, travel literature, romance, and rhetorical display; modern adabiyat expands to novels, journalism, existential and social critique, and national literatures.

Regional traditions: In Persian, Arabic, Turkish, and South Asian contexts, adabiyat encompasses the major works of each language, and the term remains a descriptor of the literary canon as well as of literary practice. In Turkish and Azerbaijani contexts, the corresponding standard term is usually edebiyat; in Uzbek and Azerbaijani, adabıyyat/ədəbiyyat is used in education and scholarship. Across the Arabic-speaking world, adabiyat can denote the classical and modern body of literary works and criticism.

Historically, adabiyat develops within the broader cultural and intellectual currents of the Islamic world, including the Abbasid and Persianate courts, Ottoman and Mughal spheres, and modern nation-state literatures. Its study intersects with philology, translation, and cultural history, and it continues to adapt in the digital era through print, online media, and education.
