The method relies on controlled micro-timing deviations, or slips, that emerge from the interaction between actor intention and sensory signals, imparting a sense of spontaneity while preserving overall coherence.

In practice, actslipsync involves establishing a baseline for synchronization and designing permissible drift ranges within cue matrices. Performers rehearse with cues that invite slight, intentional timing variations, and technologies such as metronomes, click tracks, or synchronized lighting are used to monitor drift. The aim is to create naturalistic interchanges and emergent group dynamics that feel responsive rather than mechanically exact.

Origins of the concept trace to late 2010s experimental theatre circles, where practitioners sought methods to blend precise composition with perceived improvisation. It draws on ideas from lip-sync, deadpan timing, and ensemble listening, and has been explored in live theatre, contemporary dance, and multimedia installations. Some practitioners also experiment with interactive or robotic performers, where human slips are complemented by machine cues.
