Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene, commonly known as ABS plastic, is a thermoplastic polymer that is widely used in manufacturing. The proportions of these monomers can be varied to produce different grades of ABS with a range of properties.

Acrylonitrile provides chemical resistance, heat stability, and rigidity. Butadiene, a rubbery polymer, imparts toughness and impact resistance. Styrene contributes to processability and rigidity, as well as a glossy finish. The combination of these monomers results in a material that is strong, durable, and resistant to impact and abrasion. ABS is also relatively easy to mold and fabricate, making it suitable for a variety of applications.

Common uses for ABS plastic include automotive parts such as dashboards, bumpers, and interior trim. It is also found in consumer electronics casings for devices like computers, televisions, and telephones. In the home, ABS is used for appliances, luggage, toys (notably LEGO bricks), and plumbing components. Its versatility and balance of properties make it a cost-effective choice for many manufacturing needs. ABS can be machined, glued, painted, and polished. It is not, however, recommended for outdoor applications where prolonged UV exposure is a factor, as it can degrade over time without specific additives.
