An acrylic-based material refers to substances formulated from acrylic polymers or resins, typically derived from acrylate or methacrylate monomers. The term encompasses a broad range of products, including rigid plastics such as poly(methyl methacrylate) and other polyacrylates, as well as acrylic-based coatings, adhesives, sealants, and dental resins. Common features include transparency, weather resistance, and tunable hardness and flexibility through formulation.

The most widely produced acrylic polymer is poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), known for clarity and rigidity. PMMA is used in lenses, display cases, architectural glazing, and automotive components. Other acrylic polymers are poly(n-butyl acrylate), poly(ethyl acrylate), and various copolymers used as impact modifiers, adhesives, or sealants. Acrylic materials are typically formed by polymerizing acrylic or methacrylic esters such as methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate, or butyl acrylate, with crosslinkers or fillers as needed.

Processing methods include bulk, solution, suspension, and emulsion polymerization. Emulsion polymerization produces acrylic latexes for waterborne paints and coatings, while extrusion or casting yields solid PMMA and related plastics. Applications span coatings and paints, automotive and electronics components, signage, dental prosthetics, rapid-prototyping resins, and art mediums.

Safety and environmental considerations include irritation or sensitization risks from residual acrylate monomers, and the general non-biodegradability of many acrylic polymers. Recycling options exist for PMMA, and waterborne formulations reduce volatile organic compound emissions.
